During an eight-month internship in the museum storehouse belonging to the congregation of the Religieuses hospitalières de Saint-Joseph (Montreal), I developed a special relationship with the nuns of the community. The experience led me to suggest an exercise in drawing. I asked the nuns to “blindly” draw objects in the museum’s collection, carefully observing objects of their choice and then transposing these forms without watching their hands. In these tête-à-tête, I used the same “blind” procedure to draw the nun’s portrait as she executed here own drawing. They also recounted their experience in the community. Once the session over, I drew each of the nuns again, two or three times, at several days’ interval, but from memory, with my eyes closed. The drawings—72 in all—and the accounts gathered from the encounters then became the material for an exhibition and an artist’s book.
